The Ogun State government has announced the approval of N12.5billion for the payment of arrears of deductions made from the workers’ salaries and the pension and gratuities of retirees.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, disclosed this yesterday at a press conference in Abeokuta, the state capital.
He explained that the state owed the workers about 12 months of deductions made from their salaries and pensioners’ gratuities from November 2012.
Some of the affected workers said the news was a great relief to them, because government’s refusal to pay them the arrears had been a subject of a protracted labour dispute.Adeoluwa explained that N6billion would be used to clear the backlog of gratuities from November 2012 to January 2014, while six months deductions would be paid to the workers out of the 11 months, which the state owed them.
He added that the workers would in addition, be paid their December salaries and Christmas bonus.
The Commissioners for Finance, Information and Budget, Denrele Adesina, disclosed that the state received N10.6billion from the Federal Government as its own share of the “Paris Club Refund.”
